For this house built into the side of a hill in Oakland’s Dimond District, the back yard was seldom used because of a lack of connection to the house.  The design solution included a new deck in the side yard that bridged from the kitchen door to the back corner of the house.  This created a small outdoor room outside the kitchen that linked to a new patio in the back yard for grilling and lounging.  Design concepts for the larger yard took advantage of existing terraces in the hillside to create a variety of spaces for outdoor dining, fruit and vegetable gardens, a small bocce court and a children’s play house.
