The owners of this classic Berkeley backyard were already planning a barrel-shaped sauna and a fire pit. They were looking for a landscape design that worked with these elements to create pleasant outdoor spaces. The design is conceived as three interconnected rectangular terraces that enliven the yard without creating too much visual noise. The terraces step down from the existing deck and vary in the materials used from wood to decorative gravel to gray decomposed granite. In the side yard a curving decomposed granite path connects to the frequently used shed and strategically places a Japanese Maple to help screen it from view. The planting design works off these geometries to provide a largely drought tolerant landscape with a variety of colors and textures.
